Levulan
Levulan is a treatment to address actinic keratosis, sun damaged skin, and acne. Actinic keratosis is a pre-cancerous growth on the skin. The growths are usually the result of years of sun damage. In the past, the only treatment available for these lesions included burning, freezing, or surgery. These treatments often lead to scarring. Levulan is different. The Levulan product is applied to your skin by the doctor. You then rest comfortably for about an hour as the Levulan penetrates the skin. The damaged, overactive skin cells take in the Levulan, while the normal, healthy cells do not. Next, the doctor treats your skin with a laser. The laser energy reacts with the Levulan, which is now inside the damaged cells, and destroys them. Over the next few days, the damaged cells work their way to the surface of your skin and fall off, leaving you with a healthier, clearer complexion free of scarring. Depending on the number of lesions, multiple treatments may be necessary. Make sure to discuss with the doctor the possibility of insurance coverage for this treatment.
